Ranks are useful only when placed in a working ship and an administrative system. A title may describe authority aboard, seniority ashore or a role in a particular record set. Start with the question you have, then follow the guide to personnel, ship or operational records that can answer it.
Three soundings before you begin
- Use a rank as a search clue, not a complete biography.
- Separate commissioned service from shipboard duties and later appointments.
- Record the date range before assuming continuity of title or role.
